Description:
Ref:   105fs    http://hygra.com/face/105fs

Antique Face Screen in wood with Chinoiserie decoration. C.1820.

This is decorated in penwork with a Chinoiserie scene. Typical of the style is the disregard for perspective or botanical accuracy. The framing consists of huge blooms incorporating smaller blooms and snaking leaves. The delightful central scene depicts a European lady attended by an oriental boy. A dog sits on the ground and a couple of water fowl swim in the water. A squirrel looks unconcerned and a bird dives down the spotted (stars?) sky. The style is naïve and its charm depends on its personal cultural perception and imaginative combination of designs rather than great artistic competence. The screen is likely to have been painted at home by an enthusiastic amateur eager to display his or her awareness of the newly discovered fabulous East.

The back is painted in a pattern of  floral motifs.

The handle is in turned wood and attached at an angle.

Origin: UK; Circa 1820; Materials; wood

Size: 21.2cm wide by 17.25cm handle 21cm  8.3 inches wide by 6.8 inches; handle 8.3 inches.

Condition: Please refer to the above photographs for details of condition.

The handle is in turned wood and attached at an angle.

I see it as a fantastic

performance prop.

The angle of the handle would allow you to move in unexpected ways.

Perhaps it is a coded symbol signaling system.

There is amazing detail in the floral motifs. Some appear as  almost occult symbols. There is attention to detail: the petals are delineated.
