It is stamped JENNENS & BETTRIDGE. An unusual theme for such work, it is influenced by the last phase of neoclassicism and the interest in Egyptian antiquities. Both the straight form and the theme point to a relatively early piece. Circa 1825-30.")

%20(Custom).JPG "A mahogany writing box veneered in coromandel and inlaid in mother of pearl, abalone shell and brass and copper. The exotic horsemen are an unusual theme. The work is executed skillfully, utilizing the color and light values of the shells to create a sense of movement. The box is immaculately finished inside, and out, the coromandel facings are punctuated with mother of pearl dots. Quality work with a very smooth look which betrays dependence on mechanical processes.")

This is a difficult box to date as it is extremely rare and work of this kind can date from the 17th to the early 19th century. The way the box is constructed points to the early to the middle part of the 18th century, before writing boxes were in more general use and in larger sizes made with flat tops. The technique and darkening varnish suggest early work. A conservative probability would be some time between 1740-60.")

.thumb.JPG "A mahogany brass bound box which is an example of a combined dressing case and writing desk. The lift out dressing tray is fitted for holding a man's grooming accessories. This is a very unusual arrangement. This box is very similar to another box on our site. The two must have come from the same workshop. Characteristic features of this box such as the particular shape of the protective corners, flat side handles, shape of central plaque, and quality of wood and workmanship, strongly point to the work of the cabinet maker Middleton who was recorded as working from 1801-10 at 162 Strand, London.")

This form of inlay was inspired by French Boulle work, but was evolved into a more robust genre by English cabinet makers such as George Bullock, who was one of the Prince Regent’s/George IV favourites.")

The box has two compartmentalized drawers to the sides. The top opens to a sloping writing surface with replacement leather writing surface and a lift out pen tray. There is a compartment for storing papers beneath the writing surface. The particular form makes the box ideal for personal correspondence. The raised lid would allow the box to be closed with a half written letter still in situe. The box could be locked for privacy. Boxes combining pen work with rosewood are rare. We document a few in our book Antique Boxes Tea Caddies, and Society, which may be from the same workshop. Circa 1800.")

It is inlaid in mother of pearl and painted with houses seemingly built on the side of a mountain. The color and a bare tree suggest winter. The shape of the box is complementary to the design, in that it curves upwards in line with the pictured landscape. A sensitive and clever combination of form and decoration combining the two with artistic integrity. The compartmentalized interior is lined with the original 19th Century paper.")
