An impressive carved sandalwood stationery cabinet
An impressive carved sandalwood stationery cabinet,  made in Sagar Southern India.

It has two sloping doors on top opening to reveal notepaper compartments, set with two small drawers, the exterior relief carved with Hindu deities on chariots.

A similar cabinet  acquired by Edward VII during his tour of India in 1875 (and now part of the royal collection) is in the Victoria and Albert Museum.  (See Amin Jaffer's Furniture from British India and Ceylon - Illustration  20)

It is interesting to note that the Museum's example is inscribed SANNA PUTTAPPA. SANDALWOOD CARVER./ SAGAR. /SHIMOGA DISTRICT MYSORE .

12.7" wide. Circa 1875.

The mitering of the corners is exquisite.
